Abstract

Introduction: Adolescent pregnancy remains a major public health concern because pregnant adolescents often experience inadequate psychological readiness, which may adversely affect maternal and fetal health as well as pregnancy and childbirth outcomes. Identifying the determinants of psychological readiness is essential for developing appropriate maternal health interventions.

Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the determinants influencing the psychological readiness of adolescent pregnant women in the catchment area of Sempu Primary Health Center.

Methods: A quantitative study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among pregnant adolescents aged 15–19 years registered at Sempu Primary Health Center. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire covering social support, knowledge of pregnancy, socioeconomic status, educational level, and psychological readiness. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize participant characteristics, while the Chi-square test was performed to determine the associations between the independent variables and psychological readiness. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results: Social support and knowledge of pregnancy were significantly associated with the psychological readiness of adolescent pregnant women (p<0.05). Participants who received stronger family and partner support and had better knowledge of pregnancy and antenatal care demonstrated higher levels of psychological readiness. Educational level and socioeconomic status also showed positive relationships with psychological readiness by facilitating better access to health information and maternal healthcare services.

Conclusions: Social support, pregnancy-related knowledge, educational level, and socioeconomic status are important determinants of psychological readiness among adolescent pregnant women. Strengthening family support and improving reproductive health education may enhance psychological readiness, thereby contributing to improved maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
