Introduction: Population aging has increased the number of older adults residing in nursing homes. Living apart from family members, adapting to institutional environments, and coping with age-related changes may influence the psychological well-being of older adults. Understanding their psychological experiences is essential for developing comprehensive nursing interventions and psychosocial support programs.
Methods: This study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach to explore the psychological experiences of older adults residing at Kasih Ibu Nursing Home, Balongan, Indramayu, Indonesia. Participants were selected using purposive sampling based on predetermined inclusion criteria. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method to identify significant statements, formulate meanings, and generate themes representing participants’ lived experiences.
Results: Seven themes emerged from the analysis: loneliness, anxiety, grief, decline in religious activities, self-acceptance, coping efforts to overcome loneliness, and hope for family reconnection. Participants frequently expressed feelings of loneliness associated with separation from family members and the loss of significant relationships. Anxiety and grief were commonly related to health conditions, uncertainty about the future, and limited family support. Despite these challenges, participants demonstrated self-acceptance, developed adaptive coping strategies, and maintained hope of reconnecting with their families.
Conclusions: Older adults living in nursing homes experience complex psychological challenges involving emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions. Family support, psychosocial interventions, and programs that promote social interaction and spiritual well-being may enhance the psychological health and quality of life of institutionalized older adults
