Abstract

The incidence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) continues to rise globally and poses a serious challenge in primary emergency care, as imbalances in blood glucose levels, such as extreme hyperglycemia, can trigger acute, life‑threatening conditions. One promising preventive approach is non‑pharmacological nutritional intervention using herbal‑based ingredients. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of consuming rice infused with pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius) in stabilizing blood glucose levels as a preventive measure against diabetic emergencies in patients with Type 2 DM. A pre‑experimental design with a one‑group pretest‑posttest approach was employed. Sixteen respondents were selected through accidental sampling from a population of 392 patients with Type 2 DM in the working area of Klatak Public Health Center, Banyuwangi. The intervention followed a standardized procedure for cooking rice with pandan leaves, and fasting blood glucose levels were measured before and after the intervention. The Paired Sample T‑Test showed a significant difference (p = 0.004; α < 0.05), indicating that the intervention effectively contributed to blood glucose stabilization. The glycoside and flavonoid content in pandan leaves is believed to help prevent β‑cell oxidation and lower the glycemic index of rice. This intervention could be implemented as a dietary preventive strategy within emergency management protocols for Type 2 DM in primary care settings.
